The
organizations today are in a constant struggle in a world which is always in a
state of flux. This struggle is a must for them to survive. It should be
admitted that if a common mentality for the organizational goals and activities
to be performed to achieve these goals are not shared by the everyone in the
organization, from the CEO to the employees in the lowest level, it won’t be
possible to accomplish the success targeted by the organization. So it won’t go
any further than presenting a formal appearance. Hence the greatest part of
what has to be done in the creation of such an integrity falls onto the
managers.
In
an organization like Turkish Armed Forces, where managerial activities are
realized in the highest level, it is essential that the officers in the
managerial stages should keep the units they are commanding in the best state.
In other words, the concept of ‘mediocre’ is on top of the list of
‘unacceptables’. The objective is always the ‘best’. And all the work that
needs to be done to accomplish this objective will be strong steps on the road
to success. Taking this into consideration, the officers from various
managerial stages will have to assume the command of the units they are
responsible for by keeping all these parameters in mind and implementing them.
These parameters fall into two groups: Those peculiar to the organization and
those peculiar to the manager. The parameters concerning the manager are
investigated in three sub-groups; technical, emotional and social&
intellectual. When the parameters concerning the organization are in question
we understand what a manager should implement in the organization. And when we
say those concerning the manager we mean
the points that should exists in the personality of the manager or the
points he will directly be influenced by. The ability to use all these factors
together will result in the managerial success for the part of the manager.
This
thesis, in which an account of managerial success is given, consists of six
chapters. Following the first chapter, which is the introductory one, there
comes the second chapter, in which theoretical basis for the management and
organization is studied. In the third chapter, the present organizational and
managerial structure of the Turkish Armed Forces is gone into. In the fourth chapter, it is determined what
the concepts of success and managerial success are and then it is pointed out
that how the parameters peculiar to the organization or manager should be
defined. In chapter five, a research done into the officers of the Navy is
given and what the viewpoints of the officers from different managerial stages
to these parameters directing the managerial success are put forward. Finally,
in the sixth chapter, which is also the last one, the results and proposals
about the thesis in general are presented.
