THE BASIC FACTORS ON SELF-CONFIDENCE OF NAVAL ACADEMY CADETS’ AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEIR SELF-CONFIDENCE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

The self-confidence term mentioned as coolness, courage and the belief of himself or his abilities is both congenital and can be improved so it’s necessary to deal with this.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the basic factors on self- confidence of Naval Academy cadets and the relationship between their self- confidence and academic achievement.

The study includes 120 Naval Academy cadets (30 from each class) attending the 2005-2006 academic year. Personal Information Form, Personality Questionnaire, Parent Attitude Scale and WIFAM were applied to the cadets and the data were analysed by using chi-square, t-test, one way ANOVA, Mann Whitney-U and Kruskal Wallis-H Test in SPSS program.

According to the results of the study, the self-confidence level of fourth year cadets is higher than the third year cadets.

The self-confidence level of the cadets who are participating in a sport team is higher than the cadets who are not participating in a sport team.

The self-confidence level of cadets whose parents are authoritative is higher than the cadets whose mother are authoritarian and father are authoritative.

It was found that there was an intermediate, positive and significant relationship between extraversion and self-confidence and also there was an intermediate, negative and significant relationship between neuroticism and self- confidence.

There was no significant relationship between the cadets’ self-confidence level and their academic achievement.
